What is CEREC?
An Innovative Technology To Create Dental Crowns
If you’ve entered the world of cosmetic dentistry, then you know of the many restorative options available to you when it comes to repairing and replacing your teeth. If you need a tooth replaced, the procedure would typically take on average 2 or 3 appointments. Before now, we as the patients had to spend more time needed to ensure we got our tooth restorations, no matter how long it took. Well now, there’s essentially no wait time!
OK, So What is CEREC?
CEREC is a CAD/CAM computer/software device that aids in the creation of tooth restorations, nearly on the spot. In the past, dentists would take putty impressions of the patient's teeth and would need to send the impressions to a dental lab where the dental restorations (dental crowns, dental inlays and onlays, veneers, fixed bridges, orthodontic appliances, dentures, and dental implants, etc) would be created within a few weeks. During the time in which these restorations would be made, the dentist would place a temporary restoration (placeholder) before the permanent one would be placed.
With this new technology, all of the steps mentioned above vanishes as this computer controlled machinery can design and manufacture the exact tooth restorations it needs, on the spot. This machine does exactly what the lab would produce, except, at a much faster pace, and quality is never compromised.
What is The Difference Between CEREC and Traditional Restorations?
The main difference between the traditional restoration process and the CEREC manufactured process is simply time. Because the CEREC machine creates the needed restoration tooth with the needed materials in the dental office, the time the patient needs to wait is completely removed.
How Are the Restoration Teeth Made?
When your permanent tooth restorations are made, they are usually milled from solid blocks of composite resin or ceramic (porcelain). Both of these materials are used in the dental cosmetic industry. This machine will likely be able to use many other types of materials in the future, but for now, these materials are highly recommended for patients needing these types of restorations.
