Comprehensive Services for your Oral Health
From routine checkups to more specialized treatments, our team is here to provide you with the highest quality of care in a comfortable and welcoming environment where you and your smile matter. Here's a look at what you can expect from our general dentistry services:
- Dental Checkups & Cleanings: Regular checkups and cleanings are vital for preventing dental problems long before they start. Our thorough examinations allow us to detect any early signs of decay, gum disease, or other issues, while our gentle cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup, keeping your smile fresh and healthy.
- Sedation Dentistry: We understand that dental visits can be a source of anxiety that often makes it feel daunting to get the care you need. To ensure a relaxed and stress-free experience, we offer sedation dentistry options that, paired with your procedure, makes quality dental care accessible again. Our team will discuss your needs and help you choose the right level of sedation to make your visit comfortable and worry-free.
- Tooth Extractions: While our goal is always to preserve your natural teeth, there are times when a tooth extraction becomes necessary due to severe damage, infection, or overcrowding. Our dentists perform extractions with the utmost care and attention to your comfort, and we'll discuss your tooth replacement options to restore your smile.
- Root Canals: When the inner pulp of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed, a root canal can save the tooth from extraction. This procedure involves carefully removing the damaged pulp, cleaning and sealing the tooth, and restoring it with a crown. Root canals are a safe and effective way to relieve pain and preserve your natural smile. Preserve your natural smile with our expert root canal therapy.
- Dental Sealants: A simple yet highly effective preventive treatment, dental sealants involve applying a thin, protective coating to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth, where food particles and bacteria can easily get trapped. Sealants help prevent cavities and protect your teeth for years to come.
- Periodontal Maintenance: For patients with gum disease, periodontal maintenance is crucial for preventing its progression and maintaining healthy gums and bone. This involves regular cleanings and checkups specifically tailored to address your periodontal needs.
- Pediatric Dentistry: We are passionate about providing gentle and comprehensive dental care for children of all ages. Our friendly team creates a positive and fun environment to help children develop healthy oral habits and ensure their smiles get the best start. Building healthy smiles for the next generation starts with small, meaningful steps to ensure a lifetime of smiles.
- Fluoride Treatment: Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay. We offer professional fluoride treatments as part of your regular dental care or as a preventive measure for both children and adults. Strengthen your teeth and protect against cavities with fluoride.
At Renaissance Dental Center, we believe that comfortable, compassionate dentistry goes a long way to creating relationships for life. Dr. Abernethy, Dr. Sonner, and Dr. Wells, along with our dedicated team, are committed to providing you with exceptional general dentistry care in a supportive and understanding atmosphere.

Anna Abernethy, DDS
Dr. Abernethy, originally from Concord, North Carolina, moved to Raleigh for college and graduated from Meredith College in 2001 with a degree in biology and a minor in chemical physics. Her journey towards dentistry began unexpectedly when she experienced a dental emergency during her college years, leading her to explore the field through externship programs. Witnessing a patient's life-changing smile makeover after a car accident inspired her to become a dentist. She pursued her dental education at UNC-Chapel Hill Dental School, actively participating in various community service initiatives and events. After graduation, she gained valuable experience as an associate in a dental practice.

Jill Sonner, DDS
Dr. Sonner, a Raleigh native, completed her undergraduate studies at NCSU in Biological Sciences in 1999. She pursued dental education at UNC Dental School and trained at Fayetteville VA Medical Center, gaining skills in treating medically compromised and geriatric patients, and in advanced surgical techniques, including implant placement. She achieved Fellowship with The International Dental Implant Association, mentored by Dr. Arun Garg. Dr. Sonner, alongside Drs. Abernethy and Wells, took part in a mission to the Dominican Republic, contributing to dental implant surgeries, enhancing chewing function for locals who wouldn't otherwise have the chance. Their efforts significantly improved the quality of life for many recipients.

Anita Wells, DDS
Dr. Anita Wells, developed her passion for dentistry in her hometown of Pinehurst, inspired by her childhood dentist's compassionate and personalized care. From a young age, she was fascinated by his ability to transform lives through beautiful smiles. Observing his artistic skills and the positive impact he made on patients, she decided to pursue dentistry. Dr. Wells graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor's degree in Biology and Chemistry, and later earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery with the highest honors. After practicing in Chapel Hill, she co-founded Renaissance Dental Center in 2009, aiming to provide personalized dental care based on her dedication to changing people's lives.
Dental Questions
You can ask us any questions you have about your mouth, no matter how small or insignificant you think they may be—the checkup is your time to talk candidly with your dentist. We’ll also provide you with helpful information you can use to maintain a good dental health routine at home. If we discover any oral health issues or problems during your checkup, we’ll make treatment recommendations based on your specific needs. Then we’ll work together to develop a treatment plan that’s ideal for you.
Children and adults should schedule a regular dental check up, about once every six months. Those at a higher risk for oral disease, such as those who use tobacco and alcohol, should come in more often. If you have questions or think you may be at risk, get in touch with us today—we will work together to define a preventative plan that’s right for you.
