More About Holly Springs, North Carolina

Like a great boxer, this community has taken punch after punch, been dropped to the canvas numerous times, and just keeps getting back up! What is it about Holly Springs, North Carolina that gives the town nine lives? Let’s take a look at some of the historical events and we’ll let you draw your own conclusion.

A Colorful Past

Most small towns got their start around a train depot in the 1800’s. Holly Springs got its start from being next to a, you guessed it, a fresh water spring. The town first saw a general store, a sawmill and then a cotton gin. A Scottish tailor named Archibald Leslie built a 38 room mansion in 1817 which played a huge role in the Civil War. The war was the first punch this town took. The war wiped out the male population of the small town as many soldiers were lost in battle. To add insult to injury the Union troops camped out in Holly Springs for two weeks, and many stayed at the mansion mentioned early. After the war a second punch was thrown when the railroad came through the neighboring town of Apex leaving Holly Springs looking like a deserted village. In 1875 a George Alford moved his successful mercantile business to town and the community started another economic revival. The town was incorporated in 1877 and held a population of around 300 going into World War 1, which was a third punch thrown. More young men lost in battle. The town hung on through the Great Depression and again through the fifth punch, World War II.

Modern Day Revival

The town had a population of less than 600 residents going into the 1960s. Then the big boom hit the region. In 1959 the government backed a project call the Research Triangle. The original objective of the project was to stop new graduates from the three neighboring universities from leaving the area. North Carolina State in nearby Raleigh, Duke in Durham and the University of North Carolina in Winston were all seeing graduates leave for employment opportunities. The project was hugely successful! Today you’ll find over 200 businesses in the Triangle and all the neighboring cities have exploded with a highly educated and well paid workforce thanks to the Triangle. Holly Springs is no different with a population of over 33,000 residents. Quite a change from the 600 in 1960!

Small Town Charm

The community is very proud of the fact that they have done a terrific job in controlling their growth and not letting it run roughshod! Several large manufacturers now call Holly Springs home dramatically enhancing the tax base allowing solid improvements in managing the growth.

Location

To add to the charm and culture the nice thing about Holly Springs, North Carolina is the fact that it is so close to the Research Triangle and the cosmopolitan communities of Raleigh and Durham. If that isn’t enough you can drive two hours east and visit the Atlantic Ocean or two hours west to the Appalachian Mountains. Holly Springs is indeed a boxing champion!
