More About Apex, North Carolina

The dictionary defines the word Apex as the highest point of something. It could be the tip or summit of a career, or the vertex or apex of a particular adventure. What is relevant about Apex, NC, is that the town sits at the summit of the old Chatham railroad line between Richmond, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida. The steam engines would stop at the top of their climb in Apex for a refill on their water supply. That was back in the 1870’s. But, even today, if you stood on Salem Street in downtown Apex, running water will flow to the Neuse River on one side and to the Cape Fear River on the opposite side. Indeed, the Apex.

History

The town was incorporated in 1873 even though the first train station was built back in 1854. That depot is still in use today as the Chamber of Commerce call it home. The town literally grew around that train depot as it was one of the first settlements outside of the capital of Raleigh. Located in the heart of a pine forest, Apex initially became a shipping point for lumber, tar and turpentine. As the timber was cleared and turned into farmland the tobacco industry became a vibrant part of the local economy in the early 1900’s. In 1911 a raging fire claimed almost the entire downtown. The frame structures were replaced with fireproof brick buildings and you will see those today as you visit the downtown. In fact, the entire downtown district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an example of an intact turn of the century railroad town.

Growth

As late as the 1930’s Apex was a sleepy little town of around 1,000 residents. When the Research Triangle Park was conceived and developed in 1959 just to the immediate north the town exploded. The population today is just shy of 50,000 residents. Money Magazine in 2007 ranked Apex in the top ten best places to live. Forbes Magazine ranked it number three in 2009. Then in 2014 Family Circle Magazine ranked Apex in the top ten and finally just in 2015 Time Magazine ranked it as number one!

Character

With the downtown comparable to a museum and the rapid growth since the 1960’s, Apex has developed some terrific character. You can find local retail shopping either downtown or at one of the new malls and commercial developments. Restaurants and favorite watering holes are plentiful. The Triangle has brought an educated workforce and many, many business opportunities. The convenient fact about Apex, NC, is its access to larger neighboring cities like Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. You can enjoy the local parks with their multiple recreational options or head a few minutes west to the huge Jordan Lake. Finally, there is always the option of driving east two hours to the beaches on Atlantic coast or two hours west to the adventures in the Appalachian Mountains. Without a doubt, Apex North Carolina is the summit of the Piedmont!
