Friendship is an unincorporated town in Wake County, North Carolina. As we start in the center and spin out, Friendship is surrounded by tall pine trees, not tall buildings. The region has beautiful history and traditions dating back to the original settlers and the American Revolution. It saw itself right in the middle the Civil War as well. Friendship sits to the southwest of Raleigh, directly next to the growing city of Apex. The immediate region has grown with the tobacco and cotton industries as well as with the timber and lumber. If you went searching for Friendship you will find very nice hard surfaced roads but yet not a stoplight in sight. Newer homes alongside older traditional plantation style residences are a common sight.
What Happened
The region boasts three institutions of higher learning, North Carolina State in Raleigh, Duke in Durham/and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Local government became involved in the 1950s identifying the large number of graduates that were leaving the region for employment elsewhere. They came up with the proposal of the Research Triangle Park. Here is where the three universities could leverage the area’s strengths and keep graduates in the state. Over 7,000 acres sitting between Raleigh and Durham, it took a few years to develop some traction. Today the area has over 250 employers and has thousands of patents to its credit. The brain drain from the universities was stymied. There are now well over 50,000 employees commuting to the park daily and another 10,000 contractors. The
opportunity for an above average salary and the supporting structure that goes with such success has caused the entire region to grow exponentially.

Each community in the region has received their own awards for various quality of life measures. At the end of the day the region offers affordable living with quality employment.
