Water Fluoridation

Fluoride is a mineral that is found naturally in water and many foods, which makes tooth enamel stronger. Water fluoridation is the process of adjusting the amount of fluoride in water, which will help prevent tooth decay.

The American Dental Association has endorsed water fluoridation since 1950, and on April 22 U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, M.D. endorsed describing it as “one of the most effective choices communities can make to prevent health problems while actually improving oral health of their citizens.” Click here to read the ADA’s article.

Water fluoridation is considered one of ten great public health achievements of the 20th century by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. After communities began water fluoridation, each generation has had better dental health than the one that proceeded.
