Extraction : Cost

How Much Should I Expect To Pay For A Tooth Extraction?

If a dentist has recommended the extraction of your wisdom teeth, the first thing you may think of is the cost. How much will a wisdom tooth extraction cost? In all cases, the price may be different considering the location of your dentist, if insurance is a factor, how much sedation is needed and so on. For some, the cost may be nearly $800 out of pocket costs (per tooth), while others may be much less.

The first issue you must address is why your wisdom teeth need to be extracted. The reasons may vary from the teeth being impacted, growing in crooked, your jaw is too small and so on. It is almost always recommended to remove your third molars, even if they do grow in with no problems because they are very prone to cavities and gum disease as they are the hardest teeth to brush.

How Much Can a Wisdom Tooth Extraction Cost?

There are different reasons as to why a wisdom tooth extraction can be either in the lower or higher cost range. Teeth that have grown in and broken through the gum line are typically cheaper to remove as they usually will use a local anesthetic rather than a sedative. If your wisdom teeth are still below the gum line, your dentist will recommend sedating you (usually pretty heavily) to ensure no pain is felt during the procedure. The reason for this is the dentist will need to make an incision along your gum line to reach the wisdom teeth well-below the gum’s surface.

According to Angie’s List, on average, a wisdom tooth removal can cost anywhere between $75-$200 per tooth, depending on the location of the tooth (above or below the gum line). This price may also vary depending on how much your particular dentist may charge you (high end or low end). In some extreme cases, the total removal cost can be above $1,000 for all teeth.

Can Insurance Help My Out of Pocket Costs?

The great thing about dental insurance is they can offset your out of pocket costs for wisdom tooth removal. It is recommended to go straight to your dental insurance provider first to see which dental offices they work with and which ones they will pay for, either fully or partially. This can be a great way to say a few hundred dollars if you’re worried about costs. It can also help narrow down your dentist search if you’re looking for the perfect one for the extraction.

If you do not have dental insurance, it is still highly recommended to remove your wisdom teeth if they’ve been recommended for removal. If cost is an issue, you can find a dentist who will be more than happy to work with your budget to ensure the removal isn’t painful to your wallet.  Many dental providers offer in-office and third party financing as well. Most dentists will be happy to ensure the costs aren’t too high as they know the extraction of your wisdom teeth is needed, as it may cause you more extreme problems in the future if the teeth aren’t removed quickly.
