Wow! How many people reading this article realize that the population of Raleigh-Durham is over 1.2 million residents! It is a big city with a terrific small town feel. Let’s take a look at some of the factors that make Raleigh, NC, a great place to live.

Location, location, location

Raleigh is the second largest city in North Carolina behind Charlotte. It does have a humid climate with four distinct season. None of those seasons are severe as evident by receiving only on an average of six inches of snow annually. You’ll find yourself only two hours away from the beaches on the Atlantic Ocean or head the other way, drive four hours and you’re in the Great Smokey Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains.

History Abounds

After the American Revolution was over Raleigh was chosen to be the capital of North Carolina in 1788. It was also the capital for Wake County. The city was a deliberately planned city as it was laid out in a grid. It also was spared of any significant damage in the Civil War. If you’re not found of oak trees grow to like them. The city is called the City of Oaks as all the streets in the center of town are lined with oaks.

Diversity

You will find North Carolina State University in Raleigh and you will find the Duke campus in neighboring Durham. In 1959 the Research Triangle Park was established and this has been a huge draw for employers and good job opportunities. In 2015 Glassdoor ranked Raleigh as the number one best city for jobs in the US. The mix of good jobs with the availability of decent home values has created a very high job satisfaction rate and high ratings as of late with several publications. Forbes magazine has ranked Raleigh as the second most educated city in America. We guess you could say the residents might be smarter than average!

Entertainment

There are over 1,200 restaurants in the Raleigh area so your palate has plenty of opportunities to experiment. The food is fantastic, the service is absolutely over the top! You can also find the largest beer garden in the world surpassing Munich, Germany, with over 366 beers on tap. You’ll find numerous art galleries that have in turn have inspired other areas of growth in the arts. One of those would be the world of music. You can enjoy several live concerts a week in one of two concert venues or live music nightly around the city and the city does not lack of any night life. It does lack professional sports but that is more than made up for with the quality of college athletics available year round. We mentioned the geographic location with the opportunities to enjoy the beaches on the Atlantic or hiking and skiing in the mountains.
