History
This small city only 25 minutes northeast of Raleigh and was first incorporated way back in 1837. In a census dating back to 1790 56 surnames were documented in the area, many of which are still there today. It had its beginning as a small farming community and maintains some of that original character today. Possible a blemish in the history of Rolesville is that back in the early 1800s it was the site of a large slave market. Serving as a well-known stagecoach stop, thousands of slaves were bought and sold by travelers from the surrounding states of South Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee and Kentucky. Today, because of it small town charm Rolesville has become one of the fastest growing towns in North Carolina due the impact of the Research Triangle Park. With a population today of 7,000 residents therein lies the challenges moving into the future. Rolesville is still made up of many generational farms. Farms that date back to the Revolutionary War. With its rapid growth and suburbanization as of late it will blossom in size creating opportunities and challenges for the community. The town government has addressed its assets and is mobilizing the community with a new motto of “Small town, bright future”, embracing exponential growth expectations.
The Research Triangle Park
In 1959 both local and state governments collaborated on this project. To stop the exodus of college graduates from the three local state universities, they proposed and developed the 7,000 acre park. Only 35 minutes west of Rolesville, the park now boasts over 250 science and technology corporate employers. The above average wage opportunity has not only stopped the brain drain from the universities of Duke, North Carolina State and the University of North Carolina, but it has created over 50,000 well paid jobs plus another 10,000 contractors.
