More About Garner, North Carolina
Location, location, location. That is the number one benefit or attribute about Garner, North Carolina. Thanks to the city being located along Interstate 40 and US Highway 70 you can get to downtown Raleigh in literally five minutes, six minutes to North Carolina State University and 20 minutes to the airport. The huge business hub the Research Triangle Park is only 25 minutes away, 30 minutes to the Duke campus in Chapel Hill and finally another 30 minutes west to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
Location also played into the conception of Garner. As the railroad started crisscrossing across our country, Garner had its beginning as a water and wood stop for the rail line between Charlotte and Goldsboro around 1857. The settlement got its first post office in 1878 and an actual railroad depot in 1905 and the city was incorporated at that time. With general stores popping up the town prospered. A granary, a cabinetmaker and carpenter, a drug store, blacksmith, repair shops, barber shops, livery stables and boarding houses were all big additions. The primary industry that all of these businesses supported was that of farming, with cotton being the primary crop. Location continues as Highway US 70 was the first paved highway in the entire state in 1910 and it complimented its methodical growth. It’s fun to look at the addition of the telephone in 1912 and then that of electricity in 1921 and see the immediate impact of technology.
The Triangle Research Park
The absolute biggest impact on the region was the successful introduction of the Triangle Research Park in 1959. While its original intention was to retain graduates from the three major universities it has blossomed into a concentration of over 200 businesses and a very highly educated workforce. The opportunity for employment affected Garner as well as those employees looked for permanent homes. With a population today of close to 30,000 residents, it has done a spectacular job in strategically planning its growth and still keeping its small town charm! Garner has hundreds of acres of parks and green spaces, shopping and dining, but is still only a stone’s throw away from the downtown of Raleigh.
An All American City
In 1913 Garner was named one of the top 10 All American Cities by the National Civic League. This prestigious award, called the Nobel Peace Prize Award for civic accomplishment, is based on the
community’s grassroots solutions for identifying and meeting community challenges. The award speaks volumes to the character that the small city has developed.
