More About Forestville, North Carolina

Many of the unincorporated townships in North Carolina are the result of nearby urban growth. Which makes some facts about Forrestville, North Carolina interesting. It was at one time a vibrant small town and now has literally disappeared. When you research Forrestville you will find information synonymous with Wake Forest in regards to historical facts.

History

Once again the railroad played a big part in the development of this small town. On March 19 th , 1840, there was quite a party in the village of Forestville. That is when the north and south railroad lines reached the village. Prior to that event the area was a major village located on a north-south “path” used by both Indians and settlers. The path followed a ridge between Smith Creek and Richland Creek. In
the 1820s there was a post office and number of stores providing services for the surrounding plantations. The depot was placed on the northwest corner of the tracks and Front Street. This resulted in a huge debate as the trustees for Wake Forest College lobbied to get the depot moved closer to their growing campus. Students and visitors had to walk about a mile down a dusty road to get to the campus. It took over 30 years, 1872, and the depot was finally manually picked up and hauled up the tracks to be closer to the campus. The move sparked the growth of the town of Wake Forest, leaving Forestville with eight mills, six stores, one liquor store and a shoemaker. In 1879 Forestville was incorporated as a town. It had 116 residents and remained a town until 1915. Wake Forest continued to grow leaving Forestville to stagnate. In 1956 the university moved to Winston-Salem but Wake Forest still boasts over 30,000 residents today. The residents of Forestville were finally annexed into Wake Forest in 1988. What remains of the original village is a sign documenting such.

Location and Amenities

Forestville sits only 30 minutes north of the capital of North Carolina, Raleigh. That in itself gives you a bushel basket of benefits, but the real engine behind the growth in the region can be traced back to 1959. At that time local and state governments collaborated on a plan to introduce and create what today is called the Research Triangle Park. The 7,000 acre project had one sole objective; to keep the recent graduates from the three major universities from leaving the area in search of employment. Today the science and technology area claims more than 250 high tech businesses with more than 50,000 educated employees. With another 10,000 contractors commuting to the park the project was a huge success driving the entire region into the perfect category of better than average wages with below average cost of living expenses. The entire region has received national accolades for the quality of life it is delivering. One more nice feature about Forrestville, North Carolina, is that you can pack your bags and drive two hours east to enjoy the Atlantic Ocean or two hours west and find yourself in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. Forrestville is more than a bump in the road!
