More About Wake Forest, North Carolina

First things first; Wake Forest, North Carolina is not the home to Wake Forest University. But the school is the main reason the town exists. Confused yet? Let’s look at the history of the area and then we can figure a thing or two out about Wake Forest, NC.

History

A Dr. Calvin Jones from New England bought 615 acres in 1832 in Wake County and the area became known as the Forest of Wake, or Wake Forest. He later sold his farm to the North Carolina Baptist Convention and they opened and operated a Labor Institute, or the beginnings of Wake Forest College. The railroad initially came through the area in 1840 but the college leaders convince the railroad to move closer to the school. The depot opened in 1874 and this encouraged more development and growth in the area. The town was incorporated in 1880 as the Town of Wake Forest College. In 1909 they dropped the word College, leaving Wake Forest. It wasn’t until 1956 when the circle of confusion was completed. The college relocated in its entirety to the larger city of Winston-Salem. A Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary moved into the vacated buildings and operates today as its acronym, SEBTS.

Recent History

In 1959 the area was changed forever when the Research Triangle Park was founded between Raleigh and Winston-Salem. Wake Forest, which is directly to the north of Raleigh, is only a 30 minute drive to the Research Park. In the year 2000 there were only 12,000 residents and now that number has jumped to over 40,000! In 2007 Wake Forest was the 20 th fastest growing city in America as reported by Forbes magazine. The entire area around the Research Triangle now reports just shy of 2 million residents. The success of the Research Park has attracted businesses and an educated workforce.

Local Attractions

The number one place to put away the high tech stimulus of today is to visit the Falls Lake State Recreation Area. Only minutes to the west of Wake Forest, it offers a 12,000 acre lake and 26,000 acres of timber. Everything you can imagine for recreational entertainment is available in the Park. The city itself offers over 500 acres of parks with organized activities. The downtown region has been historically preserved but with the growth comes commercial venues and the retail offerings. You’ll find plenty of destinations when it comes to pleasing your dining palate or a family evening out.

The Culture

The unique thing about Wake Forest, North Carolina, is that it draws its culture and character from its history and the entire region. The heritage of the area is truly international. The region is indeed a showcase for variety is the spice of life. Finally, you are only two to three hours from all the benefits of the Atlantic coast and its beautiful beaches or the same distance from the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains and the Great Smokey’s. It’s no wonder the entire area has become a magnet and has
exploded with solid growth.
