More About Clayton, North Carolina

When we review history of this piedmont area of North Carolina it seems there are two factors that most of the communities share. That is the introduction of the railroad and the Civil War. Both played big roles in many of these piedmont cities, and those two factors have a role in regards to Clayton as well. Let’s see if we can find other nuggets of history about Clayton, North Carolina.

A Little History

Even though you can argue that Clayton had its start back in 1770 when a road was cut through the area to support the Revolutionary War, the train depot a century later is what started the town. The town was incorporated in 1869, four years after the end of the Civil War. A certain Ashley Home started the economic revival with a successful farming and merchandising business. That foothold encouraged the start of a saw mill, a cotton gin, lumber plants, a brick kiln, a grist mill and several tobacco warehouses. In the early 1900’s the town was prospering as it developed in a hub for cotton, tobacco and watermelons. The Great Depression didn’t do Clayton any favors and then the cotton industry started to lag. The tobacco industry kept the town afloat into the 1960s.

Enter the Research Triangle

Clayton today has a resident population of 20,000. In the 1960s it was less than 4,000. The entire region exploded with the introduction of the Research Triangle. The Triangle was a government backed project introduced in 1959. Its sole goal was to keep recent graduates from the three major local universities from leaving the area. You will find North Carolina State in Raleigh, Duke in Durham and the University of North Carolina in Salem. The project hit turbo speed in the mid-1960s and today you will count over 200 businesses employing over 50,000 well paid and educated workers in the Triangle. The entire area has grown and prospered with the influx of contemporary high tech industries. Clayton is no different.

Location

Only 25 minutes southeast of Raleigh and 40 minutes from the Triangle, Clayton became a new home to many service and trades-oriented employers and employees supporting the entire market. In Clayton you’ll find small town charm with almost 300 historic homes and buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. A Main Street that looks like a Hollywood movie set paired with the recent growth and the daily necessities that are available.

Amenities So Close

You are only 25 minutes away from the cosmopolitan city of Raleigh, a capital city of 475,000 residents. You will find restaurants, watering holes, shopping and many other forms of entertainment. What is special about Clayton, North Carolina is the fact that you can pack a bag for the weekend and drive all of two hours to enjoy the Atlantic Coast with the hundreds of beaches and the Outer Banks. Or point your car in the other direction and drive two hours west to the Appalachian Mountains and the Great Smokey’s. Clayton is a real diamond in the rough!
